    vegan alternative for mantises?

I can't believe I read the whole thing! I can't believe that I actually feel compelled to contribute to this discussion! It certainly has stirred up emotions... but it has also really brought up some interesting points to ponder: - what exactly IS the nutritional make-up of a mantid's diet...

    black raptorial

Thank you all. I removed the limb. Alex was already pretty lethargic, and I think that there is a black spot on his back where the raptorial joined, so we are quite worried about him. He is still taking a bit of honey. This morning he had himself propped over the artificial plant in his habitat...

OOOPS I came here to check something... and realize I didn't update... I thought that I did. SO... I came here to check dates and stuff, because Alex is having another health issue. (Which is in post titled "Black raptorial" I will leave that discussion to the other post. Following the tricky...

messed up molt - happening now

His wings look great! I am a bit concerned about the back legs. He did climb to the top of the container overnight, so that is a good thing. When I opened the lid, he climbed up to crawl on my hands as he loves to do. He is really staying low to the ground, with his abdomen on the surface...

messed up molt - happening now

Is he ok to be hanging with his back legs down? He is really not using his back legs... they are fully extended below him not touching anything No worries about the tape. I put it on the outside of his container, and the lid is shoved down on top so that he can't get out. It was a brilliant hack.

messed up molt - happening now

I am Sunhorse's mom. Her dad posted the initial question, as she was pretty upset, and she thought Alex was going to die. Having trouble attaching photo... I will go and research how to do that.

messed up molt - happening now

Thank you Likebugs! He is a TS. This is his final molt. Sunhorse's favorite Mantid, Alex! Positive update: We helped him to transfer to a branch of artificial plant. Once he was solidly suspended we suspended the branch from the top of the enclosure. He is hanging with his front legs up. His...

    Help ... late to molt?

Thanks.... I dropped 2 little crickets in... he ate one voraciously... and now he is hanging upside down, grooming himself, ignoring the other cricket. All is well so far! Thanks for the fast responses!

    Help ... late to molt?

Concerned about "Alex." (tenodera sinensis) He (?) molted 18 days ago into (I think) L5. He did great after that molt... active... eating. He stopped eating and became less active several days ago (5 days ago)... so I figured... he must be going into a molt. The day before yesterday, he still...

I lost my one and only praying mantis yesterday :(

I certainly understand the attachment. I am also very new to this. I spend a lot of time just observing behavior, or staring at a cute face through a magnifying lens. For some of us... a mantid is a pet! And when a pet dies, it is a loss. MantidLover21, you took great care of Manty, and got him...

    Wild food!

Ok ... so there are veins in the wings ..... that would make sense! So much to learn about insects. I am finding new fascination with them. and yes .... The mantid LOVED the treat!

    Wild food!

We took "Alex" when we went to visit my parents on Vancouver Island. (4rd instar Tenodera Sinensis) I spotted a beautiful green lacewing and captured it. We admired its beauty for a while, and then fed it to Alex. :stuart: He was startled when the thing fell into his habitat.... and fell all...
