    Hello from Phoenix, AZ

Hello, I am re-introducing myself. My name is Maria and I moved into my condo here in Phoenix after having endured a bad relationship. I am happy to have my own yard with a garden and beautiful Iris oratorias that remind me of my childhood farm. I saved 2 last year from the cold, I tried...

14 ooths from 1 Iris oratoria!!!

My amazing girl, I call her "triangle head," laid her 14th ooth today! It is very small, and probably not viable, but I think that is amazing!!? Does anyone know how many ooths they are supposed to lay? I saved her from the storms and near drowning back in August. I haven't had that much...

    Long lived mantids

Wow!!! I have an Iris oratoria that has laid 14 ooths. I don't know how many they are supposed to lay. I saved her as an adult from some tropical storms we were having in August. She lived in 110 degree weather, so that shortens her life span, but she was healthy enough to lay 14 ooths!!!

    The Greatest Loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you have her ooths!

    Female calling?

I believe that they "call" when they bend their rear ends anterior and inferiorly in relation to the mantis. It seems to be always at night, and out of mine, the ones that have not mated do it each night. Of course, they will still do it if they have mated, but in my observations, not as often...

Phyllovates puking... Any help you can offer?

I'm glad she's ok. Mine is puking and won't eat honey. I'm scared.

Phyllovates puking... Any help you can offer?

I'm glad she seems to be doing better! My girl puked on me today. Then, I saw puke in her cage too. First, I thought she wasn't doing well because of old age (she laid 13 ooths). But if it is black stuff I'm guessing that it is some kind of infection? The thing is that none of the others...

    dry heaving?

Thanks for all your help. I tried giving her water and a little honey but that did not work. She didn't make it. It seemed like there was something stuck. So sad. I started raising them last February and I just can't seem to get it right.

    dry heaving?

Has anyone had a mantis dry heave before? My adult female looks like she is trying to throw up but can't. I fed her water and she did throw that up, but now she is still dry heaving. Maybe something is stuck? Does anyone know what to do? Thank you

Cold in AZ- How long can iris oratoria handle 40 degree weather?

Thanks! Yes, they are wonderful winter friends! I just hope I can find good homes for their offspring!

    Amazing Mantid -Part II

I posted a little story about an Amazing Mantid a few months ago. To make a long story short: I saved an outdoor mantid twice from drowning. She was so appreciative that she was actually following me and she even jumped on my nose when I was trying to put her back outside. I finally took her...

Cold in AZ- How long can iris oratoria handle 40 degree weather?

Yes, that helps a lot!!! Thank you Jay! I actually gave in. I was trying to make a warm area for them but one crawled up my leg and another one somehow made it to my door. I'm sure they were following the warmth. But I noticed that they could barely stand. They were both dizzy and out of...

    A Skipped Shedding???

That kind of happened to me. I had pre-sub adult that got injured. She broke her leg off from getting stuck in the mesh. It took almost 2 months, but when she finally molted she was an extra small adult with wings! She is still alive but has only five and a half legs!

mated an iris oratoria 2 months ago- why won't she lay ANYTHING?

Update: She is still alive and NEVER laid any eggs! I think she is about 4 months adult now. She has sores and scabs on her abdomen and she leaks fluid so that her wings get wet. I just keep giving her water and an occasional fruit fly. So, even if she did lay eggs they would probably be bad.

    Found a dying mantis outside

Yeah, I would bring her in. That's how I started with my mantids. I saved 2 from the cold last year and they laid A LOT of eggs! I didn't have any cages so I put them on my plants and fed them crickets and put some sticks in the plant soil for them to lay eggs. They stayed on the plants and I...

Cold in AZ- How long can iris oratoria handle 40 degree weather?

Oh. That makes sense! Thank you! I'm going to have to take them in soon. They will be upset, but at least they will live a lot longer!

Cold in AZ- How long can iris oratoria handle 40 degree weather?

Well I found 1 murdered by the neighbor's cat evidenced by white cat hairs stuck to her poor dead body! She was very fat and didn't get to lay her eggs. The outdoor mantids all like to lay their eggs on my frost cloth which is across my walkway. The cat was probably looking for a warm place...

Outdoor mantid with larvae in abdomen- Has anyone heard of this?

Thank you! That explains why 1 was murdered in the basil while the rest are fine in the basil. The other one was murdered in my pomegranate tree.

    Eye problem

That happened to my male who only ate flies as well. It happened right after he molted. He did not touch any flies while molting but my theory is that the flies got on some mold and then tracked it to the stick he was molting on. He was more susceptible when he just molted. He rubbed his eye...
