    Mantis Behavior Question

Hello all; I've noticed a few of the times that I get my L4 nymph, Siri, out for some exercise that he'll almost lay down on my hand for quite awhile. He extends his folded raptorials out and lays flat on me -once with his abdomen curled up and twice with it straight. I'm just wondering... do...

    New Arrival Jitters!

It's so exciting! What are you getting? I've only experienced this once, but I second Malakyoma... Getting worried about the cold, knowing that as I think about the mantis, he's somewhere out in the big wide world on his way to me...

    Magellan is dead.

I'm so sorry to hear about Magellan... That's really tough. :( But for the short time that I've been on this forum, it's very evident how much you care for all your mantids, so I'm sure he got to live his life to the fullest -if not in quantity than in quality. Again, sorry to hear about your...

    Introducing mantids to my landlords

That's great! I was crossing my fingers for you... Must be such a relief! Did you go in there with a "prepared statement" or did you just wing it? If I had to do that, I would have spent all day trying figure out the best way to convince them: what to say/what to omit, how to handle any...

    Nymph Molted!

Did you watch or just see the skin after? The first molt I've ever witnessed was two nights ago, and it was so nerve-wracking! Glad your little guy got through it fine, and congrats!

    My first Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii

Oh my goodness, he's so tiny and spiky! Do they retain those oversized "segments" on their antennae as they grow older? I'd never noticed that before!

    Hierodula boyz!!!

I love how every individual is so unique. The first picture especially is nice; the contrast between the brown highlights and the green is gorgeous! I have a bipapilla/patellifera and he's got only the slightest hints of brown... I'd love for him to get a bit more "caramelized"! ^_^

    Wild Orchids

Wow! Very cool! You must know where to look to have found so many, or are they fairly common? So pretty: the patterns on that adult and the bright green on the nymph!

    Wally trying to scare me

Little man syndrome for sure! :D He's beautiful... I especially love the purple eyes and the black on the abdomen. What instar?

    Apartments for Magellan and Ponder

If you'd told him the real reason, he wouldn't have believed you anyway! :D Using stockings is a great idea... I'll have to keep that in mind if I end up getting a smaller nymph at some point...

    Budwing lifespan

Sorry about Muffin; it sounds like she was a good pet. And I always get upset when I lose an animal, big or small. Seems like she had a great life with you, though, if she was over two years...

    Nikki's Bed

That's really sweet... Reading your posts about Nikki Mantis brightens my day. She's a lucky girl!

    My First Mantis

Exactly! And I knew they wouldn't mind so much, I didn't bother asking... :D I just make sure to keep the flies I'm hatching out securely hidden in my room when I'm away, because you never know... Yeah, I'm already thinking about what species would be another good one... He's so...

    My First Mantis

Ah. Right then. ^_^ I didn't even think about that. I know they have an open circulatory system, so I thought at first it was the pulse of "blood" but I swear I read somewhere on here that lots of pulsing could be a sign of getting ready to molt. Oh well. Good to know. :)

    Orchids

That newest picture is beautiful! I don't know if it's the brighter lighting, but the yellow on her thorax just pops out! Really makes me want to acquire an orchid mantis...

    My First Mantis

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I like his lopsided antenna, and it's really reassuring to know that his foot will grow back as it seems to hinder him a little. (Mostly he just goes slow when he's climbing and waits for the food to come to him.) I mist once a day and am trying to balance watering with...

    Orchids

She is beautiful! Did you just leave her "free-ranging"? Because they have the ability to change colors between molts, is it possible that they could shift towards the colors of their surroundings more if they were left with them for a long period? I know nothing about mantids, and I haven't...

    My First Mantis

After lurking around this site a bit and debating about it for a couple of months, I got my first mantis two weeks ago. (I live in an apartment while I'm at school and we're not allowed to have pets except for fish... I thought a mantis might be an acceptable substitute...) He (seems to have 7-8...

Those are great pictures! Did it take her a long time to finish it off?

    New to Mantids

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! I've been perusing the forum a bit today and have already learned a lot more, especially about raising/caring for feeder insects (since this is the thing that seems the most complicated in caring for mantids right now...) Enjoying a new addiction... I was...
