Just arrived last night for fall break. And already I've caught 6 S. carolina females and 1 female T. sinensis. i saw two more carolina females but they were too high for me to get. Here's hoping everyone's pregnant. I always forget how large T. sinensis is. Pictures forthcoming.

How cold is it up there in the day and night? I have been wanting to look for mantids but it has been dropping to upper 30° at night here upper 50° in the day. Is it too cold?

According to locals, this has been an uncharacteristically warm fall (warmer than last year), so it's around the low 70s, not cold at all. I'm actually surprised I haven't seen any males yet. Last year during this time I found carolina females and a couple of males, but no T. sinensis. My cousin also sent me a pic of a European mantis she found here as well, so that's at least 3 species in the area.

Agent A, I got you. But are you sure, there's a possibility they aren't fertile, although I seriously doubt it. One of them has ooth residue and I saw the ooth next to her but too high to grab.

I'd assume so, but you never really know. Like I said last year I found some, not many. As long as these females are fertile.

Alright then, here's to hoping I get plenty of fertile ooths.

Don't tell, but a lot of my mantids like to help me with my studies :ninja: but it's fall break, so it's allowed. :tt2:

Near Trenton. Ismart they're literally everywhere. The only bad part is, I can't really get them. I walk along this complex where I see dozens of them on the screens of people's back patios, but I can't really waltz up there and pluck them off, I can only imagine how many people would call the cops. That's how I found the Chinese too, but I've only seen this one.

I'm just North of Trenton and I never see any Mantis around...guess I should walk down into Trenton and take a look!

Oh I'm sorry guys. Didn't realize how vague I was being with my descriptions. I'm in Mercerville-Hamilton Town Square 08619. Ismart, out of all of the mantids I've seen, no males, sorry. But I'll keep an eye out for you though. I had one female lay an ooth. After my visit here last year I thought all you had in jersey were carolinas. The chinese female is the only other species I've found. But I know M. religiosa is here as well.

Had to look up M. religiosa to see what they look like. They hiss!!??!!?? Do other mantids hiss?!?! I never knew they hissed! That's so cool! Anyone know if Chinese's hiss? Although I don't want to get mine mad enough to hiss at me. We have a nice peaceful relationship.

They do not hiss.

They do make a hissing noise when the hind legs are scratched against the wings in a threat display. I don't recall how they do this exactly but i beleive Christian explained it in detail here once.
