    Age gap

Agreed, it is possible - at worst, you might have them mature a few weeks apart. Other folks' experiences may vary, but I would advise against a temperature as low as 70 F. Hierodula are native to my region and (highland areas excluded) the lows here are about 76 F. I found that keeping...

    Is this alright?

Just a suggestion, but with a relatively streamlined setup like this (cup, paper towel, perching object/s) you can consider flipping it over so the lid is on the bottom. That could help because 1) The mantis stays at the top most of the time and you won't disturb it as much when you open the...

Chinese mantis fell out of exoskeleton, will she pull through?

Glad to know your mantis came out of that accident without serious injuries! I had a similar incident happen during a tenodera female's final molt; the exoskeleton's grip failed as she was drying herself and she wound up with a visibly curved upper body and some awkwardness in forearm position...

    The Un-Enclosure Option

aww that's amazing!^^ I could never trust my mantids to remain on the same plant unsupervised. Years ago, I used to keep a large potted plant in my room and let my hierodula nymph out for an afternoon while I read a book or jabbed away at microsoft word. Several species occur naturally in my...

How to make a mantis fly?

yep, IMO best not to encourage any flying yet. The wings might not yet be up to the task. Not sure if you've done this with him as a nymph, but after a few days you can take him out on your hand and get his attention by bringing your other hand close. When he begins stretching for it, move the...

    Japanese Gladiator Matches-Cruelty to Animals!

A documentary with a mantis fighting a scorpion isn't going to be much of a documentary.. the two of them would be very unlikely to encounter each other even if they lived in the same patch of forest (reminds me of that strange programme which tried to determine - just for curiosity - which two...

    Sexing Chinese Mantis?

oh yes, don't forget to count from the bottom, not from the top ;) Or you may end up with a number like... 10.

    Japanese Gladiator Matches-Cruelty to Animals!

these vids make me so so angry... its like lion and grizzly, spartan and samurai, spinosaur-tyrannosaur... none of them EVER meant to fight I'd rather people go ahead and eat the critters instead, it's the bloodlust entertainment value that is downright abominable.

    Introducing Myself :)

welcome to mantids! u might want to make sure that you have enough food in there to get their attention, they are generally not active hunters. Or you might want to get them into a smaller container whenever you feed them EDIT: once they start moulting, 2.5 gallons is definitely small enough...

Isolated Peru tribe makes uncomfortable contact

Yea, this article really makes you think... Should we do all that we can to leave them be? Or - as fellow human beings - do we have an 'civilising mission', an obligation of sorts to reform their worldview / ethics / practices so that they can at least relate to the rest of their species? If...

Pythons apparently wiping out Everglades mammals

This means less pressure on the authorities to control us human beings. With more articles like this, i suspect the public will go howling for python skins... and more or less forget the human contribution to ecosystem damage. Which - snakes or no snakes - only increases with time as well.

    Vertebrates? Exploring my next obsession...

sigh. i wish myself back to those days when i didn't think 'brine shrimp' and 'dormant cysts' and 'marketing'... Still think sea-monkeys are great though! I had five of them survive two or three months after the rest expired.

Ego issues / Post traumatic shock disorder with my Sphodromantis "Blue Flash"

Lol someone on these forums called such behaviour 'freaking out', and the term has stuck with me :) Really alarming when it happens. Individuals certainly vary in relative 'courage' but I wouldn't rule the trauma from the housefly out, because I remember having a couple of mantids which were...

    Haven't heard from odontomantis lately

Incidentally i kept an 'extended family' of them last year. Had to let all of them go in November after i tried (and failed) to juggle them with college. No prizes for guessing, but i'm not from the US ;) They are native to my country, so I've been able to release all the excess hatchlings...
